A newborn managed to recover from the novel coronavirus after she was born to a confirmed patient in Wuhan, China.
The 17-day-old baby girl is the youngest patient to have recovered from the killer virus, according to state medial.
The baby, named Xiao Xiao, was transferred to Wuhan Children’s Hospital after she was born.
Dr. Zeng Lingkong, the director of the Department of Neonatology, said that the baby girl had an infection in her respiratory system. She was found to have the coronavirus.
Because her symptoms were not evident, doctors didn’t give her antibiotic medication so she could fight the disease on her own.
After making a full recovery without medication, the healthy baby left the hospital.
Dr. Zeng said to state broadcaster for CCTV: “She did not have obvious difficulties in breathing, did not cough or have fevers, therefore we only gave her treatment for her myocardial condition.”
After negative results in three nucleic acid detection tests, Xiao Xiao was finally allowed to go home.
“She even grew bigger and fatter here,” Dr. Zeng noted.
Another baby born to a coronavirus patient was diagnosed with coronavirus only 30 hours after birth. Dr. Zeng also said at that time: “This reminds us to pay attention to a potential new transmission route of the coronavirus – vertical transmission from mothers to babies.”
Doctors have feared the high possibility that coronavirus could be transmitted from mothers to their children in the womb.
China’s oldest patient so far is a 96-year-old woman who managed to recover from the virus after receiving treatment in intensive care units for only 3 days.
The killer virus has taken the lives of at least 2,620 people globally and infected over 79,500.
