The white and brown cow was only four months old when she fled from her home in Holland, New York, a farm that raises cows for slaughter, according to Farm Sanctuary.

What made young Bonnie escape was the cries of her family, who were about to be sold to a slaughterhouse.

While the owners were busy filling up a trailer with cows, Bonnie took the chance to run away and she ended up in a nearby forest.

News about Bonnie’s disappearance spread quickly and those walking through the forest would catch glimpses of the calf.

However, none of them were able to capture Bonnie.

People wondered how the young cow was able to live on her own in the forest especially during winter. But they soon discovered that Bonnie was not alone.

Hunters set up cameras in the woods and that’s when they found out that Bonnie was surrounded by a family of deer.

It appeared that the calf had found solace with the herd and even though different, they had accepted Bonnie.

But even though she appeared to be surviving in the woods, Becky Bartels knew this wouldn’t always be the case. After seeing Bonnie on a camera she installed, she started approaching the animal.

Every day during winter, Bartels would walk through the snow, pulling a sled carrying bedding and food for Bonnie.

The cow eventually warmed up to Bartels and started approaching her for snacks and pats.

However, neighbors threatened to kill Bonnie if she wandered onto their land, so Bartels decided to contact Farm Sanctuary for help.
