A newborn baby girl has been diagnosed with coronavirus even though both of her parents tested negative for COVID-19.
The Japanese baby was taken to the University of Yamanashi Hospital after her parents found her experiencing breathing difficulties.
As both her parents are not infected with the deadly disease, local government is now investigating how the child contracted the infection.
According to the Japanese press, the baby is receiving treatment in Intensive Care Unit after being revived by doctors.
The baby, who is less than one year old, was given a CT scan when she first arrived at the facility. Medics then tested her for COVID-19 after result of the CT scan suggested that she had pneumonia.
After two tests, both results showed she was positive.
Doctors could not explain why the baby stopped breathing. According to the press, medics suspected it had little to do with the deadly disease as she showed only mild symptoms.
Hospital staff did not wear protective gears at first as they did not know the little girl had coronavirus, according to reports. More than 40 medical workers are now under quarantine for 14 days.
To identify the virus’ transmission route, the government is now trying to trace all the people who had contact with her.
AS of April 4, the coronavirus has infected 2,935 and taken the lives of 69. Worldwide, there are 1,099,080 cases and 59,179 deaths.
Experts believe coronavirus has a milder effect on children compared to people with underlying health conditions and elderly. However, everyone can still be infected even if they don’t develop any symptoms.
One internet user commented: “Terribly sad. I hope this little tot makes a full recovery.”
Another wrote: “Poor little mite , hope she makes a speedy recovery. Wonder if she was in a forward facing pram , makes me worried seeing so many babies and toddlers maybe vulnerable to others coughs and sneezes…”
