A 3-month-old baby tragically passed away after drinking breastmilk from her mother.
Emergency services rushed to the family’s home in Louisiana, New Orleans on November 1 but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said the initial investigation did not show any obvious cause of the death.
An autopsy was conducted by the JPSO’s office.
31-year-old Autumn Blansett was arrested after a toxicology report showed that her daughter died from a lethal dose of meth in her blood. Her death was ruled a homicide.
Crime investigators took over the case and questioned the mother who later admitted that she had taken marijuana and meth before nursing her child.
Officers also found small quantities of both drugs after searching the home.
Blansett is charged with second-degree murder and will appear in court.
This is not the first time a newborn has passed away after drinking drug-fused breastmilk, the WNDU-TV reported.
Earlier this year, a 36-year-old mother was arrested after breastfeeding her baby.
Ashlee Rochelle Rans from Indiana initially claimed that she assaulted her 2-month-old son but toxicology reports revealed that the child had methamphetamine in his system.
One person commented: “I’d let her sit in her jail cell and go through withdrawals without any type of drugs to help her,” and another said: “Sterilization for addicts should be a thing.”
A third wrote: “Two of our children were born from a mother who suffers from addiction. Yes, our children have suffered from her choices, but she paid the ultimate price of not being able to parent them. I will fight to advocate for my children but my heart will always be heavy for their birth mother and her struggles.”
