A 14-month-old baby boy was dragged by his head from his family’s caravan on Fraser Island while his parents slept after two or more dingoes broke in.
The baby boy was fortunately saved by his heroic father who fought against the wild dogs to save him.
His parents awoke to the sounds of their child crying, with his screams getting fainter as he was taken farther away by a pack of dingoes. The father immediately went outside to fight against the animals.
Speaking about the incident, Frank Bertoli told reporters: “He was apparently grabbed around the back of the neck area and dragged away.
“If it wasn’t for the parents fighting off the dingo he could have had much more severe injuries.”
It is believed that the dingoes crawled under a canvas flap over the doorway and grabbed the child by the head as he slept.
Mr. Bertoli added: “I think he made his way under the canvas to get into the camper trailer.
“It’s pretty horrific to hear something like that come over the phone and we just wanted to get there to be able to help.
“They said that the main dingo was surrounded by others.”
The child’s 4-year-old sister was also in the campervan near their parents when the wild animals sneaked in.
Paramedics stationed on the island treated the boy before an RACQ LifeFlight helicopter arrived. He bled heavily but was in a stable condition in Hervey Bay Hospital.
The boy was then moved to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. He suffered puncture wounds to his head and neck, fractured skull, and cuts on his scalp, legs and body.
Paramedic Ben Du Toit also advised visitors, saying: “Just stay well clear of them, keep all food sources well locked up and away from dingoes, and never walk alone, always walk in groups.”
