Firefighters tried to stop the blaze for hours but the 850-year-old building has been severely damaged.

President Macron said in a speech outside Notre Dame that he was planning to rebuild the cathedral with the help from the international community.
‘We will appeal to the greatest talents and we will rebuild Notre Dame because that’s what the French are waiting for because that’s what our history deserves because it’s our deepest destiny.’
While Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo thanked firefighters and policemen.
‘Thank you to the [Paris fire brigade], policemen and the municipal agents who have made this evening a tremendous human chain to save the works of Notre Dame.
The Crown of Thorns, the tunic of Saint Louis and several other major works are now in a safe place.’
