4-year-old Isaiah Terrell, a son to Jennifer McCafferty is an autism patient also known as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
According to the ‘Autism Speak Organization,’ Autism refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. Some of the characteristics of autism include problems with social interaction, repeated actions and movements, and extreme reactions to the body senses: sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing.
There are two types of autism patients, those who suffer from the disorder but are barely distinguishable from others, and those who can hardly interact with other people, they crave for their own space and the and always way to be alone.
Jennifer took her son Isaiah for a haircut on December 29th despite the fact that she had always feared to take him for a haircut.
This is because Isaiah did it like having anything near his ears, styling tools used at the barber shop and the stylist’s hands would greatly irritate him.
Not forgetting the loud annoying noise from the clippers that can easily upset him. With all this in mind, Jennifer and her son took a bold move and decided to try a new stylist in the hope that all will go well.
However, she had no idea of the events that would unfold at the barbershop. They went to into a Sports Clips near Charleston, West Virginia where they were teamed up with a stylist known as Kaylen Barker. Who was literally an Angel sent from God.
As soon as Isaiah stepped onto his chair, he noticed what was about to happen, and there was no way he was going to accept his hair to be cut.
First off, he got so agitated and shouted on top of his voice. He could not stop screaming.
Fortunately enough, Kaylen, the stylist did not give into Isaiah’s tantrums, she tried her best to see to it that she finds out what was bothering Isaiah and what he perhaps wanted from her by tuning into his body, expression, and cues.
Kaylen finally managed to cool down Isaiah.
His mother Jennifer posted on Facebook saying that Kaylen had done a miraculous thing for her and son. She added that the stylist had literally sat down on the floor, carrying Isaiah on her lap while she gave him a haircut.
She said Kaylen also went out of her way and talked Isaiah about Christmas and “Dory” the animated movie. Kaylen also allowed Isaiah to spray her with her water bottle.
Jennifer was greatly surprised and amazed at how Kaylen handled her baby and how the two quickly bonded within a short period of time.
She said that Kaylen did more for her than she’ll ever know. She said “ I was ready to give up,” but Kaylen, on the other hand, was not about to give up on her little customer, she persisted until she accomplished her job of giving him a clean haircut.
Jennifer added that “Autism can be so very, very hard, but people like this make our days just a little easier.”
Thanks to Facebook, Jennifer’s Facebook post went viral and it made many rounds on the popular social media platform. News spreads fast on Facebook, even Kaylen had a chance and landed on the wonderful comments and praises about her made by Jennifer.
In response to the post, Kaylen commented that Jennifer’s son Isaiah, “made her heart smile.” She wrote that Jennifer was a lucky mother to have a little boy like Isaiah bring so much joy to another person, a stranger at that.
She also said that she loved and enjoyed the whole experience of working with Isaiah which was very humbling and heartwarming at saw time. Kaylen added that she had never known what impact her job could have on another person and thanked Jennifer for trusting and letting her cut her son’s hair.
It’s a pity that most parents of children with autism and Asperger’s can be cautious of taking their children out in public because they fear for their precious children to be looked down on and misunderstood by other people.
Kaylen was truly an angel sent from the heavens to take care of little Isaiah that day.
The way she handled him was admirable and impeccable. It’s so amazing how a small gesture was done out of kindness and love by one person can mean the world to another! Indeed Angels are live among us!
