An investigation has been launched after South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsorg reported hitting a deer with his Ford Taurus on Saturday night but a body of a 55-year-old man was found on Sunday morning.
According to Ravnsborg’s office, he had not been drinking before the incident and that he contacted 911 right away.
Ravnsborg told the Hyde County Sheriff’s Office that he had hit a deer with his vehicle, the Department of Public Safety said.
According to Dakota News Now, the body of Joseph Boever was found on Sunday morning.
It took almost 22 hours to identify his body, leaving family members suspicious and frustrated, Joseph’s cousin Nick Nemec said.
Nemec told Keloland: “My worst fear is that they’re trying to get ducks in a row to absolve the attorney general of any wrongdoing.”
Ravnsborg had been at a fundraising dinner at Rooster’s Bar & Grill. He was driving to his home when he was involved in the US highway 14 crash, spokesperson Tim Bormann said.
Bormann also said that the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation was asked to assist in the investigation.
Ravnsborg, who was elected to the post in 2018, released a statement on Sunday, saying: “I am shocked and filled with sorrow following the events of last night.
“As Governor Noem stated, I am fully cooperating with the investigation and I fully intend to continue do so moving forward. At this time I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to the family.”
