A Black Lives Matter protester who was previously accused of injuring a police officer has been released on bail after the DA dropped the felony charge.
28-year-old Derrick Ingram was charged with felony assault after using a bullhorn to shout in the ear of a female cop who allegedly sustained hearing damage during the attack.
Following the incident, Ingram, who is one of the Black Lives Matter leaders in the area, was charged with felony assault.
According to the New York Post, however, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has ordered for the charge to be dropped and for Ingram to be charged with misdemeanor assault instead.
The decision followed shortly after an angry mob confronted NYPD officers who arrived at Ingram’s home to arrest him.
Following a stand-off, the police retreated, whereas Ingram later surrendered himself to the local precinct.
Before his felony charge has been dropped, Ingram was facing up to seven years in prison for his alleged attack on the police officer. Thanks to his charge being lowered to misdemeanor assault, however, there is a chance that he makes it through with no jail time at all.
Following the DA’s decision to drop the felony charge against the BLM leader, the president of the Police Benevolent Association of NYC slammed the leaders for bowing to the mob.
“Is there any doubt who is in charge of this city now? The criminal mob is dictating their terms to the NYPD brass and district attorneys, who are tripping over themselves to comply,” NYC Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch expressed in a statement.
“Why are our leaders sending us out to enforce laws they don’t believe in? And what are we supposed to tell New Yorkers who are watching us retreat while violence overwhelms their streets?”
