Most of us feel so great after building a sandcastle or when we manage to bury our sibling in the sand. But one artist creates sand sculptures that are so detailed they all look like live animals from a distance!
From horses and bulls to sharks and mermaids, Andoni Bastarrika’s works are so realistic beachgoers mistake them for real animals.
Bastarrika wrote on his Facebook page: “The sand fascinates me because no matter how you look at it, it will always teach you things if you are willing to learn. In order to create a sculpture, an unthinkable number of sand particles participate, hugging each other tightly through humidity, so that someone could model their union.
“And once the artist steps back, its piece will remain at the mercy of nature, meaning that sooner or later the wind will dry them up and release each particle, slowly consuming all the individuality and authenticity.”

In an interview with Bored Panda, Bastarrika said that the first sand sculpture he made was a little mermaid. He then made use of the ‘fluidity’ of his hands. “They knew what they were doing,” he expressed. “I devoted myself to developing this gift and have spent the last 10 years doing just that.”
One internet user commented: “Those are just something else. A few if I came upon them would scare the living crap out of me.”
Another wrote: “He’s really good, and I love that there are some older photo’s in here. You can tell he’s been doing this awhile. Very talented.”
