An article of impeachment against President Trump will be introduced on Monday, Congressman Ted Lieu of California announced on Twitter.
180 members of Congress have reportedly signed as co-sponsors of the article of impeachment to remove Trump from office.
Lieu said that he is confident the Republican members of the house will also give their support.
“We’ve just hit 180 cosponsors of the Article of Impeachment drafted by Rep @davidcicilline, ©RepRaskin, me and @HouseJudiciary staff,” Lieu wrote on Twitter.
“We will introduce the Article of Impeachment this Monday During the House’s pro forma season.”
In an interview with Forbes, the House Rep. of California said: “We strongly believe some GOP legislators will vote for the Article of Impeachment based on what they informed us confidentially.”
If passed by the House, Trump will be the first president to be impeached twice, the Independent reported.
Since the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters, there have been many calls for the removal of President Trump.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on the cabinet and Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment which allows the executive branch to remove the current president for “being unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
Pelosi then said that the House would move forward with the article of impeachment and confirmed that drafts were already being prepared by Democrat lawmakers.
Lieu told CNN that he had been in talks with many Republicans to co-sponsor the article of impeachment.
“There will be Republicans who do vote for it,” he said.
An administration official said on Saturday that Mr. Pence will attend the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden on January 20.
Biden has remained silent on the subject of impeachment and said that he is now focusing on how best to implement his agenda.
“What the Congress decides to do is for them to decide,” he said. “Trump) is not fit to serve. He is one of the most incompetent presidents.”
He added: “I think that what 81 million people stood up and said, ‘It’s time for him to go’ … The quickest way for that to happen is for us to be sworn in on the 20th.”
