S. Army veteran Glendon Oakley is being hailed a hero after he rescued many children from the El Paso, Texas mass shooting.
Oakley was shopping at a sporting goods store in Cielo Vista Mall in West El Paso when the shooter opened fire in Walmart.
He told an MSNBC reporter that a child came into the sporting goods store where he was shopping and said there was a gunman.
“Me and the guy that works there were like “He’s a kid” so we didn’t believe him,” Oakley said. “I walked out the mall to go to Footlocker. I hear “Bop! Bop!””
After hearing the gunshots, the U.S. Army veteran took out the handgun he was licensed to carry and searched for a place to hide. He saw many people running away from a nearby Footlocker store.
“They just dipped. So I ran with them. I just tried to make my way to the parking lot,” Oakley recalled.
But on his way out, he saw a group of children who were running inside the shopping plaza.
“I got my bag in my hand. I’m trying to pick them up, as many as I can, just run out,” Oakley expressed. “But they’re so anxious, they’re, like, jumping out of my hands.”
Oakley managed to take many children out of the shopping center.
“When I got out, I guess one of the cops thought I was the shooter or something,” Oakley, who was visibly shaken during the interview, said. “So I had to show ’em my clip and stuff, show ’em I had my license to carry. He said I was fine.”
He added: “I was just so worried about those kids man. I’m just worried about those kids. I wasn’t really worried about myself. I just hope those kids are alright.”
