Authorities have revealed the identity of the student who was shot and killed by police in a school in Tennessee.
17-year-old Anthony J. Thomson Jr. was shot in the bathroom after police responded to a report of an armed man at Austin-East Magnet High School.
The teen’s identity was revealed as investigators said that the cop who was injured during a ‘struggle’ with Thompson Jr. was not shot by the bullet from the student’s gun.
The recent report seems to show that the injured officer was actually shot by police during the confrontation in the bathroom.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released more details of the shooting that left a school resource officer severely wounded and a student dead.
According to TBI Director David Rausch, police responded to a report of a gunman at the east of the school before 3:30 pm. The teen, identified as Thompson, was then found in a bathroom.
The student was ordered to leave the bathroom but he did not comply, Rausch said.
“As officers entered the restroom, the subject reportedly fired shots, striking an officer,” he said in a statement released on Monday.
Police then fired twice and hit Thompson.
On Wednesday, the TBI released another statement: “Preliminary examinations indicate the bullet that struck the KPD officer was not fired from the student’s handgun.”
The only gunshots in the report were fired by officers.
“This is why our agency uses terms in our releases such as ‘preliminary,’ ‘possibly,’ and ‘reportedly,’” the TBI’s statement read. “This update provides clarification to the initial information released on this case.”
