Engineers Have Built Incredible Lightweight, Breathable, and Waterproof Arm Casts Which May Replace Plaster Casts

A start-up based in Chicago has come up with a design, which is a highly required upgrade from the cast that was a medical breakthrough a hundred years ago.

The medical device start-up, Cast21, hopes to revolutionize the way in which broken bones are mended. They have formed an alternative to the traditional cast, which is lightweight, breathable and waterproof.

This is completely opposite to the present casts that are heavy for us to carry and cause skin infection, itchiness and a foul smell since it is not possible for the patients to clean underneath it.

Cast21 is not only easy to apply but also doesn’t require water, heat or any other equipment for application. Moreover, the cast takes only three minutes to be applied and just three steps.

The cast, which is a honeycomb-like padded sleeve, is slid on the arm that is fractured, a duo of liquid resins is then poured into the sleeve that is empty and is then left to harden.

Since the liquid is becoming a malleable gel, the doctor is supposed to mold the gel in order to fit the limb of the patient.

Although the implications of the product are revolutionary, the innovation of the cast is still processing. Presently, Cast21 caters only to forearm fractures.

Nonetheless, they wish to expand to include various sizes and produce casts for legs also. Hogg has stated that the product has the potential for use at home first aid and in the military.

The product is presently available in various colors. Moreover, Cast21 also assures the users that their family and friends can sign their casts similar to the traditional ones.
