Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson said that a high school pool party is suspected as being the cause of the dreaded second wave of Covid-19 that epidemiologists have warned people about.
The state had began easing lockdown measures earlier this month by allowing gyms and restaurants to reopen. Gov. Hutchinson said that the number of infections have rebounded once more in what he described as “a second peak”.
Hutchinson said that a good number of those increased infections have been attributed to a pool party in his state. He did not go further to condemn or criticize the partygoers, saying that he is certain the party was not held for any malicious intent and people were just trying to have some fun.
Specific details of the party and the consequent infections have not been revealed as of this point. These are information such as where the party was held, how many partygoers were present and how many infections have been traced to this one party.
As of this writing, 5,775 Arkansans have tested positive for the novel coronavirus with 115 reported cases of death. Last Thursday saw the largest daily increase in the number of patients since the outbreak with 454 new cases being reported.
The previous ‘peak’ was roughly a month ago, where 291 new patients tested positive on April 21st. Hutchinson said that a second peak or wave seems to be happening after the numbers sharply decreased for a few weeks.
Arkansas is far from the only state where the daily record for new cases of Covid-19 reached a new high in the United States. At least ten other states across the nation have had the worst one day increases last week.
Hutchinson said that the party is a great example why people should still exercise personal discipline and common sense as more states continue to reopen and attempt to return to a sense of normalcy.
The governor’s announcement came as Americans begin their Memorial Day weekend. Widely considered by many as the beginning of the summer season, images and videos of people swarming beaches and other beauty spots have been reported.
Experts warned that in a world where there still is no vaccine or treatment for the virus, social distancing measures are still an absolute must for people to keep themselves and others safe.
