A man who had planned a romantic proposal was shocked to learn he set his apartment on fire in an attempt to surprise his girlfriend.
The incident occurred in Sheffield, England, where the unnamed romantic lit up “hundreds” of candles in his apartment as part of the preparations for his proposal.
After everything was ready and set, the man left the apartment with burning candles inside unattended for a moment to pick his girlfriend up.
As the couple got back to the apartment, they were shocked to see it engulfed in flames.
According to the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, three crews were dispatched to put out the fire at the Sheffield apartment. Fortunately, they were able to subdue the blaze before anyone could get injured.
As the firefighters talked to the man behind the proposal about what could have caused the fire, the romantic opened up about his plans for a sweet proposal and explained he lit up a series of tealight candles before picking his girlfriend up.
“This was going to be the scene of a romantic proposal and the occupant, a chap who we shall not name, had really gone to town!” the fire service wrote in their Twitter post.
“… As romantic as they are, and as much as we all love ‘em, candles can be SO dangerous.”
In their message, the fire service also urged people not to leave lit candles unattended and always extinguish them after use. In addition, South Yorkshire Fire warned people not to place candles near flammable objects.
While the surprise didn’t go as planned, and an apartment burned in the process, the man allegedly got what he wanted as his girlfriend agreed to marry him.
