A group of some two dozen anti-lockdown protestors were confronted by the police after gathering near a police station to participate in a mass group hug according to Evening Standard.
The incident occurred outside London’s New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the metropolitan police, where some twenty people gathered to protest against the government’s decision to impose lockdown measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
While several people were seen wielding signs opposing lockdown, such as the one that read “my body my choice,” some also took the opportunity to object vaccination and 5G technology.
After the police arrived at the scene to break up the group hug and send people home, one elderly man was arrested for refusing to comply with orders given by the officers.
“A small number of protesters gathered near New Scotland Yard in Westminster earlier today. Officers engaged with the protesters, encouraged them to go home and the group subsequently dispersed. One man arrested,” the Met Police confirmed in a statement following the incident.
The protest followed over a month after all public gatherings have been banned in the UK in an attempt to flatten the coronavirus infections curve.
Speaking on the matter at the time, Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people not to go outside unless necessary. He also told the people they shouldn’t be shopping unless they’re buying food or medicine.
“If you don’t follow the rules the police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings,” the PM said.
“To ensure compliance with the government’s instruction to stay at home, we will immediately close all shops selling non-essential goods, including clothing and electronic stores and other premises including libraries, playgrounds and outdoor gyms, and places of worship.
“We will stop all gatherings of more than two people in public – excluding people you live with. And we’ll stop all social events, including weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies, but excluding funerals.”
