Animal rights activists of the Animal Liberation Front have broken into a farm in Suffolk, UK, and freed over 9,000 pheasants in order to prevent them from getting killed for fun in game shoots.
The ALF warriors cut the fences of the controversial Heath Hatcheries and released the birds into local woodland. Their ‘rescue’ mission was a part of their campaign aiming to “dismantle the shooting industry farm by farm, shoot by shoot.”
“Once inside the farm we went straight to the battery cages which were inside a fenced off area,” an AFL spokesperson said following the incident.
“We could hear partridges but we could also see an expensive sensor based security system. We had to leave these partridges as we did not have the equipment with us to disable the alarm system.
“We surveyed the 45 breeding pens for pheasants, then removed a panel from each one of these pens, herded the pheasants out into the corridor then further on and out of the farm directly into a wooded area.
“Each pen contained around 200 birds, making the total around 9,000.”
The Heath Hatcheries had previously been investigated for allegedly breaching the Animal Welfare Act by keeping the birds locked in tiny metal boxes. Since 2015, they have also been a target of the AFL.
Following the incident, thousands of birds fled into local woodland, posing imminent danger to local fauna and native species.
“This latest attack on a game farm by animal rights extremists is completely unacceptable,” Countryside Alliance’s chief executive, Tim Bonner, expressed.
“By releasing birds without making provision for them to adapt to the wild many of them will die as a result of these thoughtless and ignorant acts.”
According to Mr. Bonner, farmers shouldn’t “have to live in fear” and the people responsible for the attack “must be investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice.”
