The care and compassion from a friend can make one’s day. When a student from Phoenix showed what kindness and care means to her friend in need, the friend crossed all boundaries to plan a special surprise for her.

Haley Olson is a 7th grader in Phoenix who had never witnessed the love and affection of a best friend. Growing up with 6 other siblings, she did not always have the trendiest and newest things.

Before coming to Phoenix, she studied in Atkinson Middle School, where she had a difficult time and was a constant target for the bullies because her clothes were not as ‘trendy.’

She once told a news channel that she always came home crying from school and told her parents how she never wanted to go back there. The bullying affected her so much that she was fine with being home-schooled.

However, this all changed when she joined Pheonix. A fellow student in her class named Mariah Andrew soon understood how the bullying was affecting her adversely and made an effort to become befriend her.

She wanted to put an end to Olson being the victim. A few days down the line, she went and asked Olson what size her clothes are, without even hinting at what she was planning.

Later that day she went home and gathered a few things to surprise Olson. Mariah, being the kind-hearted girl she is, put together a gift, including shoes, clothes, and backpacks. This made Olson very happy. She even said in an interview that she was jumping all around the school, screaming how glad she was.

This act of kindness Mariah showed had others inspired to reach out to Olson. Olson was finally getting the attention and affection she deserved but never received, and this made her very happy and emotional.

Seeing this, Mariah, however, was grateful to have Olson by her side. She said in an interview that Olson was a very good friend to her as well. She was there whenever Mariah needed her and times became hard in school.

According to surveys, about 60% of middle school students say that they have been bullied and 160, 000 of them would rather stay at home than go to school every day due to bullying. These numbers are already very high and still increasing significantly.

We need more students and friends like Mariah who care for people as they are and further encourage others to do the same. Even parents should take the initiative and teach their children to set an example for others.

Being kind and spreading love can make all the difference in someone’s life. This might even change the perspective of the bullies and make them rethink their actions too. You never know how a little bit of love can change the world.
