Thousands of American flags and more than 50 pillars of light have been placed at the National Mall.
Nearly 200,000 flags were placed in honor of those who cannot attend President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ inauguration because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The stunning display called the ‘Field of Flags’ is comprised of 56 pillars of light and 191,500 US flags.
Photos showed the American flags placed in rows in front of the US Capitol. The flags represent almost 200 Americans who cannot be present for the inauguration due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has taken the lives of almost 400,000 Americans.
The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) said that the pillars of light represent the 50 states and US territories.
On Tuesday, Biden and Harris will lead a tribute to the victims of coronavirus. The ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday at 5:30 pm, will feature lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Pool.
“The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris represents the beginning of a new national journey,” said Pili Tobar, the communications director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
“However, in the midst of a pandemic – when so many Americans are grieving the loss of family, friends, and neighbors – it is important that we honor those who have died, reflect on what has been one of the more challenging periods in the nation’s history, and renew our commitment to coming together to end the pandemic and rebuild our nation.”
Biden’s team has asked that towns and cities also join in the event by ringing church bells and illuminating buildings “in a national moment of unity and remembrance.”
