Named the ‘Always Home Cam’, the device consists of a drone that rests on top of a stationary base and automatically takes off and performs a patrol when sensors detect movement.

As the drone flies around the home, the camera embedded in it live-streams the video via the Ring app, allowing the homeowner to keep an eye on their belongings while miles away.

According to Amazon, who recently also released a new cloud gaming service and unveiled a new Echo speakers design, they were motivated to come up with a security device that would “give more viewpoint flexibility” by flying around the home when needed.

“We wanted to create one camera that could give users the flexibility of every viewpoint they want around the home, while delivering on our founding principles of privacy and security,” Ring founder Jamie Siminoff said.

“Instead of simply encouraging customers to buy more cameras and set them up in more locations around the home, how could we solve this problem with one solution.”

As the retail giant confirmed, the drone’s lightweight, sleek design allows the device to move around the home safely. In addition, the drone features technology that allows the device to avoid obstacles and prevents the drone from bumping into objects, people, and pets.

Speaking of the unique design, Ben Wood, the chief of research at CCS Insight and an expert in the industry field, said:

“The Always Home Cam is an incredibly ambitious device that will seem like something from a science fiction movie for many consumers.

“I expect it to generate a huge amount of interest from technology enthusiasts who are typically the people who embrace smart home technology first.”

However, as the industry expert warned, the technology could prove controversial and “provoke a huge discussion around privacy and the future role of technology in the home.”

According to the reports, the security drone will hit the shelves sometime next year after it gets approved by the US Federal Communications Commission. The device will reportedly cost around $250.
