An Amazon deliveryman was caught on surveillance camera hitting a pensioner in the face after the senior allegedly confronted him for not wearing a face mask.
The incident took place at The Mantell Plaza in Miami Beach, Florida, where 73-year-old Ray Breslin closed the door on an Amazon delivery driver who attempted to enter the condo without a face mask earlier in August.
“I open the door, I said, ‘Excuse me, you have to have a mask on’. He said, ‘I’m just delivering’. I said, ‘It doesn’t matter. You wanna come in the building, you need to have a mask on’,” Breslin, who is a resident of the Miami Beach apartment complex, said in an interview with WSVN.
“All of a sudden, he just puts his foot at the door like that. He’s not gonna let me close the door. I pushed his foot out of the way and closed the door.”
After the heated exchange of words, the delivery driver left the building whereas the senior followed him in an attempt to take photos of his van.
Soon enough, however, the driver returned to the condo and things took a nasty turn. While the Amazon deliveryman wore his face mask at that point, he continued to argue with the elderly resident before hitting him in the face with his phone.
“Then he came back with a mask on, and I thought, ‘OK, not so bad’, and I open the door, and I let them in,” Breslin added. “He brings his phone up like that and smashes me in the face.”
After the 73-year-old allegedly warned the deliveryman that the entire incident was caught on camera, the man fled the scene.
“I was like… what are you kidding me? I said, there’s a camera right there that just shot all this — and he looked, put his head down, took his packages and walked right out the door,” the senior told NBC 2 after the incident.
As the 73-year-old’s lawyer later suggested, the attacker could be charged with felony battery.
“This is a felony battery. The fact that an Amazon driver, any delivery driver, would contemplate getting violent with somebody in a situation like that is beyond me,” attorney Michael Grieco expressed.
Following the incident, Amazon has apologized to the victim and confirmed that the driver in question is no longer their service partner.
