Nick Mathews was a retired detective constable who had feared to have caught the virus after traveling to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to celebrate his 59th birthday.
He was also suffering from underlying medical issues, fell ill after he and Mary (his wife) came back from the island and died on Saturday.
Nick is also the father of two and is considered to the first patient under 60 to be killed by the coronavirus in Britain. The number of patients in the UK rose to 1,391, and the death toll stands at 35.
Mary shared the death of her husband in a heartbreaking Facebook post. She wrote that at 3:00 am on Saturday; she lost not only her life partner and soul mate; but also her best friend.
She and her kids Ben and Charlotte are proud that they had such a great influence in their lives.
Furthermore, Mary also advised her friends and family not to visit them until the spread has been controlled. She said that everyone should stay inside until this all goes away.
Mary and her children have no choice but to grieve in isolation as they wait on their test results for coronavirus.
Mary said that it is agonizing time where you desperately need a hug but cannot get one. The family also penned down a note on their front door asking people not to knock.
Nick retired from Avon and Somerset police ten years ago after he suffered from a heart attack. He was popular in his locality for charity work. His death came as a shock to his friends as he led an active life post his attack.
Mary also urged that anyone who has come in contact with her or her husband in the last 14 days to isolate themselves and seek medical assistance.
