Brave women in Afghanistan said the Taliban locked them up in a basement of a bank to stop them from joining protests in Kabul.
Demonstrators took to the streets after the leader of the anti-Taliban resistance called for a ‘national uprising’ against the Islamist group.
Photos showed Afghan women arguing with militants, whereas a Taliban fighter was pictured pointing an M-16 rifle at a woman’s face.
A video shared online shows an Afghan woman in a basement as she panned around to show female protesters and children locked in an underground car park.
But the clip was immediately cut short when a man started shouting in the background.
It was the head of Tolo News outlet, Miraqa Popal, who shared the video on Twitter, saying that some witnesses said Afghan women were locked in Azizi Bank in Kabul ‘to prevent them from joining protesters.’
Reports also revealed that fighters were hitting people, including women, with their rifles.
Taliban fighters dispersed demonstrators by firing gunshots into the air. According to reports, they also arrested several protesters.
The demonstrations came as the group announced a caretaker government.
On Monday, the Taliban also claimed victory over Panjshir – one of Afghanistan’s provinces that previously resisted the Taliban rule.
The UN’s deputy special representative for Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, said that one-third of the population was already starving.
In a news briefing last Wednesday, he said: “More than half of Afghan children do not know whether they’ll have a meal tonight or not.”
“That’s the reality of the situation we’re facing on the ground,” he added.
