A Beijing senior medical adviser claimed the coronavirus pandemic could be over by June if all countries follow the strict health measures of China.

Epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan urged nations to ‘get mobilized’ and ‘intervene on a national scale’ to stop the crisis spiraling now outside China.

Credited with helping to fight the SARS outbreak, Zhong warned that the new coronavirus would ‘last longer’ if countries ‘do not treat the infectiousness and harmfulness seriously.’

Beijing reported that the ‘peak of the epidemic has passed for China’ with only a small number of new cases.

Authorities in China credit their strict measures including the lockdown of Hubei province with keeping the disease under control.

But the outbreak is now worsening outside China and the World Health Organization recently declared a pandemic.

Italy is one of the countries that have taken aggressive measures, closing stores and schools across the country.

US President Donald Trump has also imposed a travel ban on European countries to stop the spread of coronavirus in North America.

Zhong said at a news conference: “If all countries could get mobilised, it could be over by June. My advice is calling for all countries to follow WHO instructions and intervene on a national scale.”

The Beijing medical adviser said viruses in the same family usually become less active during warm months.

“My estimate of June is based on scenarios that all countries take positive measures,” he added. “But if some countries do not treat the infectiousness and harmfulness seriously, and intervene strongly, it would last longer.”
