Nicole Böhm found two black-and-white kitties in dirty German farmland and she decided to take the pair home with her.
Nicole promptly whisked the kittens away to a safe, loving, and clean home where they started thriving.
One fine day, Nicole noticed that one of kitty’s coat appeared a bit different. It had flecks of white hair coming out of the patch which was completely black.
She thought it was simply a small white spot on the cat’s back but rushed her kitten to the vet. Then, she learned that Elli, her cat, had Vitiligo which is a rare skin condition causing her to lose pigmentation from her hair and skin.
Fortunately, this condition is painless but cannot be cured. Eventually, Elli transformed before Nicole’s eyes until she looked completely different than the time she was brought home.
Nicole recalled that when Elli was brought home, she had the tuxedo coat, which began changing about a year later after her birth.
Vitiligo occurs when cells that produce melanin get destroyed and begin manifesting early in dogs and cats. Stress, neurological disease, autoimmune disease, or exposure to toxins may trigger this condition.
The areas where melanin is not produced start turning white and this causes interesting patterns to appear on the animal’s fur. You can spot this condition in humans too, which leads to the formation of pale patches on the skin.
However, much to Nicole’s relief, Elli’s vitiligo does not seem to have appeared because of any underlying medical condition. For Elli, life was going smoothly while her parent witnessed a rare phenomenon of her constantly changing coat.
As time went by, more of Elli’s black patches began fading and led to a beautiful snowy web. Due to the unique patterns caused by vitiligo, Elli’s coat looks stunning. In case you are wondering how vitiligo affected the kitten, you must know that this condition did not affect the animal at all.
