The 6-year-old pooch was brought to Wags & Whisker shelter after getting transferred from an overloaded shelter in Texas.

From there, Zelda made it to Seneca Krueger, her foster mum, who took care of her for seven months. When the dog was finally able to overcome her fears and got ready for adoption, Zelda moved in with her new family in Chanhassen.

“Out of 30, 40 foster dogs, what happens is you love them, and then you let them go and you take the next one,” Krueger said according to KARE 11.

“And with Zelda, I adopted her out and spent three days crying. I felt like I had lost my dog.”

And apparently, Zelda felt the same way as she ran away from her new home and spent 97 days getting closer and closer to her foster mum.

During the dog’s long journey, Krueger was determined to find her beloved Zelda and even enlisted help from a lost pet tracking organization, START for Dogs.

After months of searching and multiple alleged sightings of Zelda, the pooch made its way to a home just miles away from Krueger.

After the homeowners provided the lost dog with food, START for Dogs set up a night camera and found out that she looks like Zelda.

Before Zelda returned for another meal the following day, Niki Taylor and Kathy Brunner of START for Dogs set up a trap to come to the bottom of the story.

Once the dog got trapped, Krueger was informed immediately. Minutes later, she arrived at the scene and took her first glance at Zelda in months.

While the pooch appeared thinner and lighter than she remembered her, a chip check confirmed that the dog was indeed Zelda.

Following the reunion, Krueger officially adopted Zelda whereas her owners, who only had her for a few days before the escape, assigned all ownership rights to Krueger.

“I think we believe we choose dogs, but I really think it’s dogs who choose us, and I think that’s what happened,” Krueger expressed.
