Will Smith has finally spoken out about his shocking on-air assault and apologized to Chris Rock for slapping him in the face.
On Sunday night, the King Richard star baffled other nominees and the viewers of the 94th Academy Awards when he stormed the stage and struck the presenter in the face after the latter made a joke about his wife’s alopecia.
Moments later, Smith received an Oscar for Best Actor. During his acceptance speech, he apologized to the Academy for his actions but failed to make any mention of Chris Rock.
Now, the Hollywood star finally spoke out and apologized directly to Chris Rock saying he was left “embarrassed” by his actions.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable,” Smith wrote in his Instagram post.
“Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
Concluding his formal apology, Smith went on to apologize to the Academy’s leadership, his fellow nominees, and the people watching the show.
“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world,” the 53-year-old actor added.
“I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.”
Before signing off, Smith admitted that he was “a work in progress.”
