A young woman was left temporarily blind after suffering an allergic reaction while getting eyelash extensions.
18-year-old Jasmine Dewhurst from Liverpool, UK, was left with swollen eyes and ruined eyelashes after her trip to the salon where she got her lash extensions.
As the girl insisted, her beautician failed to perform a patch test and she suffered a terrible allergic reaction to the glue used in the procedure.
One day shortly after the procedure, the teenager woke up only to find herself unable to open her swollen eyes. Not only did it take several weeks for her condition to improve but she also lost all of her existing eyelashes in the process.
“I showed her a picture of how I wanted them and when she was done she said, ‘They’re a bit more full than you wanted’ so straight away that was a big red flag,” Jasmine recalled.
“She showed me them in the mirror and I wanted to cry because I really didn’t like them. She had managed to glue the top lashes with some of my bottom lashes so one of my eyes was a bit glued together and I couldn’t open it properly.
“I was sat in the car after trying to detach my bottom lashes and I had to yank some fake lashes out which pulled some of my natural eyelashes out as well.
“After that they were okay for about a week but then they got really painful – my eyes felt really hot and itchy. They stung so much and kept watering. I woke up in the morning one day and I couldn’t open my eyes so I started to panic because I couldn’t see anything and I didn’t know what was wrong.”
According to the 18-year-old, she wasn’t able to remove her extensions for a month and when she finally succeeded her own lashes were gone too.
Now, Jasmine has spoken out to urge other people to take caution and make sure their beauticians perform a patch test before applying anything on their eyelids.
“The lady who previously did my eyelashes did a patch test behind my ear but I didn’t really think much of it. When this girl didn’t do it I just thought maybe that’s something the other girl just does but then I found out afterwards that they’re all supposed to,” Jasmine added.
“My eyelashes are just starting to grow back now so I can put mascara on again. If they’ve healed enough one day, which I imagine could take years, then I would get them done again but definitely make sure to get a patch test.
“Everyone should make sure they get a patch test and know the ingredients of the glue if they can because clearly I’m allergic to whatever was in that glue.”
