A 52-year-old man who’s been living for free in a three-bedroom home for more than two decades has avoided eviction again.
Guramrit Hanspal hired a new attorney just one day before the court hearing.
According to reports, three different owners have tried to get him out of the property but Hanspal has managed to dodge eviction multiple times.
Real estate company Diamond Ridge, the current owner of the property, tried to kick Hanspal out of the Meadow home on Wednesday.
However, Hanspal’s attorney William Friedman explained that his co-counsel David Gevanter had just been hired the day before a judge was set to hear the case so he requested more time, according to the New York Post.
Nassau County Judge William A. Hohauser then agreed to delay the case.
Diamond Ridge attorney Jordan Katz told the judge: “This is the last of approximately 40 attorneys who have appeared on the eve of a hearing.
“This is very typical of the defendant — he recycles lawyers to buy himself more time,” Max Sold, who works for Diamond Ridge, said. “This guy is basically mocking the courts.”
During the court hearing, Hanspal’s lawyer accused Katz of using ‘scandalous language.’
According to the New York Post, Hanspal purchased the house at 2468 Kenmore St. for $290,000 in 1998. However, he has made only one mortgage payment of $1,602.37 before he defaulted.
Before Diamond Ridge owned the property, Washington Mutual and Chase banks fought Hanspal in lengthy legal battles.
When the real estate company acquired the home from Chase in 2018, Hanspal was offered $20,000 to leave. But the tenacious man refused the money, forcing the real estate company to continue running a legal tab of more than $150,000 and paid over $50,000 in property taxes.
Hanspal has used every loophole, from hiring attorneys at the last minute to changing the courts’ rules to his favor.
