Two Capitol police officers have been suspended while some 15 of them are facing an investigation following the deadly insurrection at the seat of US democracy.
As it was recently revealed, two of the officers tasked with protecting the Capitol engaged in interactions with the rioters that stormed the building.
While one of the cops donned a MAGA hat, the other reportedly participated in taking selfies with the violent mob.
“I know there were two people suspended. One was the selfie officer and another was an officer who put a MAGA hat on and started directing some people around,” Ohio Representative Tim Ryan said during a press conference.
The moment during which one of the unnamed cops posed for a selfie with a rioter was caught on camera by journalist Timothy Burke who shared the viral video on Twitter.
As Mr. Ryan also confirmed, Yogananda D. Pittman, the first female Capitol Police Chief, is investigating to see whether the rioters received any help from any of the officers stationed at the Capitol at the time of the insurrection.
“You can peacefully protest, you can have your opinion, you can scream from the rooftop about your opinion, but you can’t impede the process, the constitutional process that we have been following in this country for over 200 years,” Ryan added.
“They were illegal acts and those people should have been immediately arrested.”
While some of the officers are facing backlash over their actions, and in some cases inaction, during the Wednesday riot, others have been hailed heroes for standing their ground as protesters barged into the Capitol.
One of the officers that have received a heap of praise is Eugene Goodman who distracted the angry MAGA mob and led them away from the Senate chamber.
