A dying man called the police and confessed to a crime he committed 25 years ago.
According to officers, terminally ill Johnny Dwight Whited ‘wanted to get it off his chest’ and admitted to killing Christopher Alvin Dailey, 26, in 1995.
Whited from Alabama was ‘remorseful’ and said that he was dying.
Speaking to the New York Times, detective Sean Mukaddam shared the moment they received a call from Whited.
“He said ‘I want to confess to a murder that I did years ago,’” the officer shared. “I’ve never had a situation where I just pick up the phone and have a call like that.
“Nothing where the suspect calls me out of the blue and wants to confess.”
The detective also said that the 53-year-old did not know the year or the date when he shot Daily in the head. However, records connected Whited to the murder on April 26, 1995.
Mukaddam said the alleged killer was ‘embarrassed about certain things’ and did not give further details.
“Despite the extensive investigation, a suspect was never developed in the case,” a police statement read. “In the years that followed, the case was revisited several times for leads.”
However, nothing materialized until Whited called the police to clear his conscience.
He gave officers information that matched evidence in the unsolved case.
Whited even took them to a wooded area where the body was discovered and re-enacted the killing, the report said.
The 53-year-old has been charged with murder and remains held on a $15,000 bond. His attorney, Griff Belser, declined to comment and said that he wanted to meet Whited before discussing his confession.
