A young boy tried to protect his mother from armed intruders when they opened fire.
Footage of the horrifying incident, which occurred at around 10:30 am on September 30, shows the moment several armed men stormed through the door of an Indiana home.
In the surveillance video, Tamika Reid can be seen ironing clothes while her son David plays next to her. Four men then burst through the door, with one pointing a gun to the mother, WNDU reported.
Another person is being forced by one of the intruders to go in the same direction as Reid.
5-year-old David then jumped into action and threw his toys at the attackers. He also grabbed a man’s arm and tried to pull him away from where his mother was.
In an interview with WSBT, Reid said: “What you seeing was me ironing our clothes, getting our clothes, ready to start our day.
“You would hear me saying, ‘what is that?!’” as armed men entered their home and opened fire.
The proud mother called her son ‘hero,’ saying that ‘he was trying to hit the guys.’
“My thing was I need to get him out of the house before they do something to my son,” Reid added.
David said that he was trying to protect his mother. “I hit him and I tried to throw my car at him,” he told the news station.
The intruders left without hurting anybody or taking anything.
South Bend Police Media Liaison Christine Karsten said to WNDU: “As this little boy is defending his family, and his home, we’re asking that the community now defend him.”
She added that “no little boy, nobody in general should have to go through something like this so it’s really important we get those who are responsible for this heinous crime off the streets.”
