The elderly couple who were found dead near a trail took their own lives in a suicide pact.
Stella and Lee Vigil were a Colorado Springs couple who were first reported missing on Friday evening after failing to return from an Edmundson Trailhead hike.
Since the couple failed to come back home by 8.30 in the evening, their family members alerted the authorities of their disappearance, prompting El Paso County Search and Rescue to launch a search mission.
As KKTV reported, the rescuers had come across the couple’s car before locating Lee and Stella’s lifeless bodies near the Woodmen Road trail.
According to the authorities, the couple was found at around 12.30 am, some four hours after they were reported missing. The police have also confirmed the couple had suffered gunshot wounds.
Now, the authorities have revealed that the elderly couple had an agreement to “end their lives together.”
“Through the course of the investigation, detectives obtained evidence that supported an agreement between Mr. and Mrs. Vigil to end their lives together,” the Colorado Springs Police Department confirmed.
According to the autopsy performed by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, Lee took the life of his wife before turning the gun on himself. As a result, it was ruled that Stella died from homicide, whereas her husband died from suicide.
May they rest in peace.
