Dentists are slamming TikTok users who were seen grinding down their teeth with nail files to achieve a symmetrical smile.
While the social media influencers claim that the simple tip helps them get symmetrical smiles, dentists warn that it can cause permanent damage to their teeth.
Dentists say the TikTok users are destroying the structure of their teeth as they file away at the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth that protects against the damaging effect of dietary acids.
A lack of enamel can lead to extreme sensitivity and tooth decay.
Dr. Chad Evans said to Business Insider: “The moment that you remove tooth structure, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re doing irreparable damage and destruction to your teeth.”
In June, TikTok star Mia Dio shared a video of herself grinding down her teeth with a nail file.
“I’m going to file my teeth down with a nail file because they’re not perfect. I have some ridges, and we’re balling on a budget … trigger warning,” she told her fans. “It’s literally working!” she screamed.
One fan commented: “I’ve thought about doing this so many times. Omg they look good!”
Dentists have also used the social media platform to inform people that the hack is dangerous.
Dr. Z Mackie said in her video: “Shaving your teeth down with a nail filer is no good… it can cause major sensitivity.
“If you shave too much off, you might need a filling or a crown.”
One internet user commented: “Stupid is a stupid does. I’m sure their parents will be pleased they raise such a dumb kid.”
Another wrote: “These people can’t be my future…”
A third added: “Oh wow! The stupidity just doesn’t cease…”
