Chaos erupted in the capital of Colorado after a large group of rioters besieged the Denver Police HQ and shot fireworks at police officers.
According to the reports, some fifty to seventy-five armed demonstrators descended on the police headquarters with guns, explosives, and axes on Saturday evening.
Outside the building, the ‘anarchists’ allegedly set trees and an American flag on fire. They also shot fireworks at police officers and caused one cop to suffer third-degree burns.
During the riot, the demonstrators reportedly also shattered windows of the surrounding buildings and broke into a nearby fast-food restaurant.
Following the confrontation with the police, twelve people got arrested. As Police Chief Paul Pazen also explained, one of the officers suffered third-degree burns during the attack on the headquarters.
“I want to be clear, what we experienced last night was not a protest. It was anarchy,” Department of Public Safety’s executive director Murphy Robinson said during a press conference on Sunday.
“The people that showed up last night – the anarchists that showed up last night – brought weapons to the table. They had guns, they brought explosives, axes, machetes and had one intent purpose and that was to harm our officers that were there to serve in the line of duty to protect our city.”
As Robinson added, a jail inmate cap has been lifted in order to book the arrested anarchists into jail despite the cap previously being imposed in an attempt to help combat the spread of coronavirus.
The executive director also slammed the “anarchists” and denied allegations suggesting that the crowd supported Black Lives Matter by protesting to defund the police.
“The narrative that these anarchists are marching for justice of Black lives is frankly false. The public needs to know that you do not represent us. Stop using the color of my skin as an excuse to tear up my city,” Robinson said.
