A video taken in Oklahoma shows an off-duty police officer opening fire on a man suspected of shoplifting.
The Walmart customer attempted to flee in his vehicle before being shot 11 times. Police confirmed the incident is being investigated after a video was shared online.
Neither the off-duty Langston University officer nor the alleged thief, who was taken to a hospital, have been named. According to onlookers, the man suspected of shoplifting was shot and has a dark complexion.
According to police, the man tried to leave the store with items he didn’t pay for.
In the video shared on Facebook, two men were having a fight before the Walmart customer tries to drive away. The off-duty cop then opened fire, shooting the car ’10 to 11 times’ before the vehicle drives away.
In an interview with News on 6, witness John Hamilton said ‘about 10 or 11 shots’ were fired at the man of color.
“I was standing at a 45-degree angle from where the shots were fired. If I was in the wrong place, I could have been a target as well.”
“The suspect was hit. He received non-life threatening injuries. He arrived at a hospital and we have detectives there now speaking to him,” said Del City Police Commander Bradley Rule.
A spokesperson for Del City police said to Daily Mail that the customer had a receipt for buying a BBQ but tried to flee with more than what he had paid for.
In a statement, Langston University officials said: “The officer was not performing duties on behalf of Langston University at that time of the incident.
“The Langston University Police Department intends to cooperate with the Del City Police Department if assistance is requested.”
