A couple, who work for the NHS, canceled their £10,000 wedding due to coronavirus outbreak.
Alex Buckwell and David Collie, from Eastbourne, were due to get married on April 11 in Scotland and planned to go to Vietnam for a two-week honeymoon.
26-year-old Alex said: “I’d bought my dress, and because David is originally from Glasgow he and his groomsmen were going to wear kilts and we’d booked a piper and a saxophonist.”
“We had flights, hotel, outfits – the lot – ready and paid for when the coronavirus hit.”
They had planned the menu for the three-course dinner and were very excited to go to Vietnam for their honeymoon.
However, due to the coronavirus crisis, the couple was forced to cancel their dream wedding which has now been postponed to the next April.
Alex said she was left heartbroken for having to cancel her dream wedding but David said he would take her to Waitrose to buy filet steak and a bottle of wine to make the day special.
The couple told about their canceled wedding to their neighbors when they were clapping for the NHS in the street.
The couple’s neighbor Bernie Hellett decided to throw the couple a surprise bash on April 11 – the day they were due to get married.
The couple had no idea what their neighbors were up to. On April 11, when the couple heard bagpipes, they opened their door and found their neighbors on the street.
Alex said: “We didn’t know anything about it until we heard bagpipes and opened our front door and saw a table and chairs with a bottle of champagne and flowers.
The couple had their first dance in the middle of the street.
Alex said they were left in tears and thanked the kind neighbors who she had only interacted with when they were clapping for the NHS.
She described the moment as special and magical.
Alex said: “It was the most touching surprise. To know that this was all organized by strangers made it even more incredible. I couldn’t stop crying.”
David added: “I was really taken aback by this amazing gesture. It was quite incredible.”
