In China, a McDonald’s restaurant has banned blacks from entering their store due to fears that black people might be COVID-19 carriers.
Recently, a video has been circulating online where a customer was showing holding a sign reading that they had been informed that black people are not allowed to get in the restaurant.
It is believed that the outlet is located in the city of Guangzhou in southern China. The clip started uproar on the internet after McDonald’s was accused of giving rise to the growing xenophobia, specifically towards the African nationals in China.
As per a statement, McDonald’s said that the notice did not represent their inclusive values and that branch was closed down temporarily.
This incident came after China was publicly confronted by African officials over the racist mistreatment of the Africans in Guangzhou.
The notice was written in English and was established due to concerns for the safety of customers.
It said that for the safety of their health, they should consciously notify local police for isolation and urged them for understanding the inconvenience caused.
That clip was uploaded on Twitter by an account (Black Livity China) and sparked an outrage on social media.
One commentator wrote that banning black people was completely insane and the world should know about this and termed it as real racism.
Another comment read that they felt sorry for what the African community had to bear in China. The commentator further wrote that they were Chinese and support black people for their rights. They added, in the end, that nobody should be treated that way.
McDonald’s said in a statement that they have closed down the unit temporarily and will be educating all of their staff on their values that include serving everyone equally.
