As per reports, Amazon is planning to hire an additional 100,000 employees to meet the increased demand due to coronavirus outbreak in the U.
S.A. The virus originated in China.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to deploy new workers in order to fuel e-commerce deliveries as well as increasing the pay for the employees in Canada and the U.S.A. by $2 per hour through April.
The pay hike will also occur in Europe, where it will go up by £2 in the U.K. as well as several EU countries. Presently, Amazon pays $15 per hour as the starting wage to employees in its fulfillment centers across the U.S.A.
The senior vice president of operations of Amazon, Dave Clark said that Amazon has been witnessing a notable increase in demand for the products, which implies its labor needs would be unmatched for this time of the year.
The increased demand is due to the closing of several schools and businesses. Even major events have been canceled in a bid to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The Journal added that Amazon expanded its medical-leave policy in order to involve part-time warehouse workers on Wednesday.
Additionally $25 million has been set aside as a relief fund for delivery partners like drivers and other employees affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier, the company had eased its policy about unpaid time off to allow the workers to take unlimited unpaid time off in the March end without penalties.
The expansion of Amazon comes after the U.S. President Donald Trump revealed on Sunday that he had talked to the top business leaders in the U.S.A. to ensure everyone was on the same page regarding cording a response to coronavirus.
