US President Donald Trump called the coronavirus the ‘Chinese Virus’ in his post on Twitter as he vowed to protect American businesses from the economic fallout due to the pandemic.
“The United States will be powerfully supporting those industries, like Airlines and others, that are particularly affected by the Chinese Virus. We will be stronger than ever before!” he wrote on Twitter.
This comes after the president faced claims that he is losing grip of the situation and released new guidelines that will change the norms of Americans for the next weeks.
As of writing this, there are 6,469 confirmed cases in the USA and 109 deaths.
Trump urged older people to stay home and advised everybody to avoid crowds. He acknowledged that the coronavirus may send the economy into a recession and said that the country may be dealing with the disease until July or August.
America’s biggest school system closed as the stock market had its worst day since 1987. Questions remain about the country’s ability to provide hospital space for people who get the infection and the ability to test for coronavirus.
Trump said at a news conference: “We have an invisible enemy.” He also said people shouldn’t go to food courts, restaurants and bars.
“This is a bad one. This is a very bad one,” he added.
Trump also said that every American “has a critical role to play in stopping the spread and transmission of the virus.
“If everyone makes this change or these critical changes and sacrifices now, we will rally together as one nation, and we will defeat the virus, and we’re going to have a big celebration altogether.”
Trump added: “With several weeks of focused action, we can turn the corner and turn it quickly.”
