An angry mob of protesters was seen throwing sticks, stones, and other objects at hundreds of men and women who were standing up for basic human rights while marching on International Women’s Day in Pakistan.
Groups of irritated Islamists belonging to militant groups have gathered in Islamabad in a counter-rally against marching protestors who took to streets to promote women’s rights on International Women’s Day.
While the supporters of the event were seen in large numbers, there were also plenty of armed Islamists who wanted to sabotage the march.
As the local authorities have reported, the police were struggling to block the angry mob as they attempted to destroy the barriers.
Meanwhile, the militants were allegedly seen throwing dangerous objects, including sticks, bricks, and stones, at the protestors.
According to the reports, the country’s conservatives have been on high alert due to equality-promoting slogans seen during the last few events of their kind.
Some of the mottos that have upset conservative Islamists in Pakistan include: “My body, my choice,” “Stop being menstrual phobic,” “Stop killing women,” and “My body is not your battleground.”
As the organizers of the march reported, last year’s event resulted in a backlash including rape and murder threats to women who took part in the protest.
This year, things weren’t any better, whereas the militants allegedly vandalized posters and murals related to the event ahead of the march.
In addition, the protestors were physically assaulted by having dangerous objects thrown at them as they were standing up for women’s rights during the march.
