A coronavirus hotel quarantine in China collapsed, taking the lives of ten people while others got trapped under the wreckage.
The 5-story building in Quanzhou city crumbled, sparking a desperate search for survivors.
58 residents had been in isolation in the 80-room hotel and all had tested negative for coronavirus when it collapsed. According to reports, there were 6 car dealerships and 16 hotel staff at the site.
48 people were rescued while others got trapped under the rubble.
It is not clear what caused the hotel to collapse but it had recently been converted into a quarantine.
Rescuers in orange suits were photographed rushing to the site.
The squadron leader of the Quanzhou armed police detachment’s mobile unit, Guo Yutuan, said: “We are using life detection instruments to monitor signs of life and professional breaking-in tools to make forcible entries. We are trying our utmost to save trapped people.”
The Fujian provincial government stated that the province had 296 cases of coronavirus and almost 11,000 were placed under observation.
There are more than 110,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide and at least 3,831 deaths.
In the United Kingdom, 2 deaths have been recorded with 206 cases.
The head of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, Dr. Richard Hatchett, said the government must adopt an ‘aggressive’ response to tackle coronavirus.
“This is the most frightening disease I’ve ever encountered in my career, and that includes Ebola, it includes MERS and it includes SARS,” he said.
“I think the most concerning thing about this virus is the combination of infectiousness and the ability to cause severe disease or death.”
He also described the world’s situation as ‘like being at war.’
