Two teenagers are jailed for 5 years each after one of them just passed driving test as they caused the death of 17-year-old Olivia Alkir during a race.

The 17-year-old racer ignored Olivia’s screams to slow down as he drove his car near Ruthin.

Racing against his friend, 18-year-old Thomas Quick, the teen dashed down the B5105 carriageway and crashed into an approaching Mercedes.

Olivia, who had sat at the back of the teen’s Ford Fiesta, died from the crash after desperately begging the 17-year-old driver to slow down.

Both racers admitted to causing the death of Olivia by dangerous driving. The crash at Mold Crown Court also injured four others.

The court heard how 18-year-old Quick had ‘manipulated’ his 17-year-old pal into racing with him. But the younger teen had just passed his driving test a day before the crash, and had already been warned many times by teachers about reckless driving.

Driving at speeds between 70mph and 90mph, the teen’s passengers, including Olivia, were pleading with him to slow down.

His vehicle crashed into a Mercedes after crossing onto the other side of the road, taking the life of Olivia. Two other girls suffered injuries while the driver of the Mercedes spent almost two months in hospital.

Judge Parry said that the tragic crash is “one of the worst examples of dangerous driving one could imagine,” adding that the two teens “were the cause of those dreadful consequences. That was purely down to your arrogance, selfishness and egotistical conduct.”

He told the two: “You have had the benefit of excellent upbringings. This isn’t a case involving vulnerable, poorly-educated, disadvantaged young people.”

The judge also called for banning newly-qualified motorists from carrying more than one passenger for one year.
