Zohran Mamdani has won the 2025 NYC Mayoral Elections, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Silwa.
Mamdani, who is a 34-year-old New York State Assembly member and self-described democratic socialist, is now the first muslim and the youngest mayor in over 100 years.
His victory was described as nothing short of historic, with a win that also signals a huge shift in NYC politics towards a more youthful and more progressive electorate.
His campaign focused mostly on issues linked to affordability and economic justice, with proposals that included a rent freeze for stabilized units. At the same time, he’s promised free city buses, universal childcare, city-owned grocery stores, and higher taxes on the wealthy.
He even designed a broad coalition of young voters, working-class New Yorkers, and diverse communities across the city.
Cuomo, after losing the Democratic primary in June to Mamdani, rolled out an independent bid but couldn’t overcome the insurgent progressive momentum. Silwa was seen trailing massively in the final tallies.
After his win, Zohran didn’t spare Donald Trump the humiliation and asked him to turn the volume up. Trump responded on social media by stating: ‘And so it begins!’
