President Trump shared on Friday that Memphis would be the next city to attain a federal policing surge, and the second following Washington, DC, after a successful FBI task force collared nearly 500 violent criminals earlier this year.
Tennessee’s second biggest metropolis, which has a population of nearly 611,000 people, recorded a massive 297 murders last year, and that had the nation’s highest violent crime rate among cities with nearly 250,000 inhabitants.
As per the FBI data, Memphis authorities tracked a shocking 2500 violent crimes for nearly 100,000 residents in 2024.
We are going to Memphis, and it’s a deeply troubled location, and the mayor is so happy about that. The Democrat Mayor who goes by the name Paul Young mentioned that he’s happy’- Trump added. The Republican Governor is also said to be happy, as Trump shared when visiting Fox and Friends.
At a news conference later on Friday, Young mentioned that while his city was high on too many bad lists, he did not request the National Guard, and he did not think it was the way to drive down crime.
The mayor also mentioned that any federal presence needs to examine the root source of violent crime, mentioning a clear need for mental health services, housing help, and many jobs.
