A man was arrested after a boat exploded in New York City’s Long Island Sound.
The incident forced more than 20 people to jump into the water after the dangerous explosion ensued.
Officials have confirmed that 3 people were injured in the incident, and 19 more were forced to swim for their lives from the blaze that arose after it took over the ship.
The boat is said to have caught on fire at about 8:30 pm on Saturday night while out on the Sound near City Island, near the Bronx. First responders were seen rushing to the scene.
Pictures shared on social media showed the massive, thick plumes of smoke billowing from the vessel. Another clip displayed the fire taking over the rear end of the boat, with everyone onboard running for the ship’s front.
Three people were said to have been pulled from the waters while the rest of them managed to make their way to a nearby island where they waited to be taken back to shore by the Coast Guard.
One person is said to be in a critical condition in the hospital, while another is said to be serious, and a third is said to be recovering to a stable state. The boat’s pilot was arrested by the police, who believed to be intoxicated while driving the vessel. More investigations are taking place to determine what went wrong.
