The man who adopted a ‘child’ who was actually a 22-year-old woman stormed out of a recent interview after an explosive argument.
Natalia Grace’s story made headlines after it was featured in a documentary series called The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.
In the docuseries, a couple named Kristine and Michael Barnette adopted what they thought was a 6-year-old girl from Ukraine.
But they immediately became suspicious of Natalia and accused her of trying to harm their biological children.
They eventually realized that their adopted daughter was a grown woman with a form of dwarfism.
Only two years after the couple adopted Natalia, they petitioned Marion County Probate Court to change her age to 22.
After a year, the Barnetts moved with their three biological sons to Canada, leaving Natalia alone in a Lafayette apartment.
Last year, the couple, who are now divorced, were charged with neglect of a dependent but Michael was found not guilty and charges against Kristine were dropped.
Natalia has now spoken out to share her side of the story in the new docuseries ‘The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks.’
The documentary shows unseen footage and evidence, and also statements from different professionals, including genetic experts and retired FBI agents who investigated the case.
In the preview shared by Entertainment Tonight, Natalia and Michael sit face-to-face with her now-adopted father serving as a mediator.
But the argument got too heated that Michael was seen tearing off his mic and telling the producers: “I tried.”
He then walked out of the interview, saying: “Leave me alone!”
Natalia then looked at the camera and said: “I want people to pay for what they have done.”
