We all have habits, both good and bad ones.

From the cup of freshly brewed coffee in the morning to the crunchy popcorn in the cinema, habits follow us everywhere. The thing about habits is that they are easy to develop and nearly impossible to let go of.

Some habits are not good for our well-being and are actually far more dangerous and detrimental than we think.

Here’s a list of 8 seemingly harmless habits which can actually land you in big trouble. Try to get rid of them, or even better, replace them with healthy ones.

1. Don’t leave a water bottle in your car.

Many people keep a bottle of water in their cars but there are two reasons they shouldn’t do so.

First, a transparent water bottle can act as a lens, converging the heat and light of sun on the surface next to it and possibly starting a fire. The possibility of that is very small but it is not zero.

Bright Side

Second, if the bottle falls down in the driver’s feet, it can block the brake or accelerator pedal, acting as a precursor of an accident.

2. Don’t try to capture everything on your smartphone.

This might come as a surprise to many but there’s a scientific basis behind it.

According to a study carried out by Linda Henkel from Fairfield University, when we are taking photos on our devices, we are not locking the precious moments in the pictures and are missing a lot of details.

It is, therefore, better to live the moment, without taking any pictures.

3. Don’t put your phone under the pillow while charging it.

A number of fire departments has warned not to put your phone under a pillow while the charger is connected to it.

When you come home after a long day and the phone connects to the Wi-Fi, it starts backing up your data and updating your apps, which makes it warm.

At the same time, the charger is pumping in 20 or even 30 watts of power into the battery.

Combining all the factors, the phone can get to a temperature high enough to catch fire or cause the pillow to catch fire because there’s nowhere for the heat to escape.

4. Never rest your feet on the dash of your car.

It may look cool to sit with the seat reclined totally to the back and your feet resting on the dash of the car but it is a dangerous act to do.

Two things can happen, both of which are not what you want. The lesser evil is that if the car stops suddenly, you’ll hit your knees into your face, possibly getting fractured bones.

Secondly, and more importantly, if the airbag of the car gets inflated for any reason, it will snap your legs backward, causing multiple fractures, joint dislocations, and injuries.

This is not just a theory, there have been tons of such cases.

5. Don’t hang used towels on hooks and don’t fold bath curtain to one side.

If you hang a used towel on a hook instead of the proper place to hang it for drying, it is highly possible for the towel to get infected with bacteria.

Mold might start growing on the towel, and it may stink like used socks. Same is the case with the bath curtain. Open it to both sides so that it completely dries.

6. Don’t make coffee your first diet in the morning.

A lot of us start our day with a cup of coffee, believing it to be healthy but it’s not. When we are hungry, the stomach anticipates food and prepares itself for digesting the food by secreting gastric juices.

When the coffee reaches the stomach, it flows around unlike solid food, making the stomach release even more gastric juices which can cause heartburn in the short term and bigger problems like stomach ulcers in the long run.

Experts suggest coffee should be taken only after breakfast.

7. Abstain from popping pimples.

Pimples are formed when the outlet of glands in your skin tissue gets blocked and the secretions (mainly oil) start piling up.

Sometimes, the area can get infected with bacteria. In such case, the body sends its army of white blood cells to get rid of the bacteria.

As a result of this, a white mass gathers in the pore and the skin around it gets red.

If you attempt to pop a pimple, there’s a high chance of getting the surrounding area affected. If you have too many pimples, visit a Dermatologist as popping them would only give you more of them.

8. Avoid popcorn

Almost everyone loves popcorn, especially when going to watch a movie but there are some things about them that you should know.

Dentists suggest that small bits and pieces of popcorn can get stuck in the teeth and can’t be removed even with the routine dental care.

As a result, infections of many kinds can develop in the teeth.

Bright Side

One more thing to consider is that most of the microwave popcorn and movie popcorn actually have high carbs and fat content so it’s better to avoid them.
