750,000 Poppies Were Dropped Over The White Cliffs For Remembrance Sunday


WWII planes released 750,000 poppies over the famous White Cliffs of Dover as the nation remembered the fallen.

The Second World War Dakota dropped the gentle flowers as it flew above the English coastline.

Hundreds of people filled the Battle of Britain memorial.

Thousands of local services took place in villages and towns across the country while the politicians, dignitaries and the Royal family gathered at the Cenotaph in Westminster for the remembrance service.

The Royal British Legion also advised everyone to join in the act of remembrance.

The aircraft, with five veterans aboard, flew past at an altitude of 500ft and released poppies as it passed over the area.

WWII veteran Warrant Officer Roy Briggs was one of those who went up. The 94-year-old great-grandfather said the poppy drop tribute was as much as anybody could do.

“I am 94 and they are still 20 and 21. They will never be anything else to me,” Mr. Briggs said.

He also said that the flight was a surprise and was only revealed a few days before the remembrance.

“I couldn’t really believe at 94 I was getting involved in something like this,” he expressed.

Flight Lieutenant George Prichard said the flight in Dakota was ‘wonderful.’ The 96-year-old shared: “It was a great, great day and I was thrilled to be part of the event.

“Something I had never expected I would be doing. Something I shall remember for a very, very long time.”

Also aboard the Dakota was Royal Engineer Stephen Craddock, who served multiple tours of Northern Island, Warrant Officer Class One Paul Clark, who has served in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, Macedonia, and South Sudan, and Cps. Sgt Major Clark, who served for 27 years.
